Indonesia says it will limit access to social media platforms for children under the age of 16, becoming the latest country to introduce measures aimed at protecting young people online.
The communications and digital affairs ministry announced Friday that a new ministerial regulation will delay social media access for minors, with accounts on what the government calls “high-risk platforms” set to be gradually deactivated starting March 28. Platforms affected include YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bigo Live and Roblox.
Communications and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid said the move is intended to protect children from online threats such as pornography, cyberbullying, scams and addiction.
Indonesia joins a growing number of countries tightening rules around children’s use of social media. Malaysia has announced a similar ban for users under 16 starting in 2026, while several European nations have also proposed restrictions following Australia’s introduction of a similar policy.
