The B.C. government has introduced new legislation aimed at tackling weapons and violence in supportive housing, with Housing Minister Christine Boyle saying the changes will give operators stronger authority to remove “problematic” tenants.

Boyle said the bill responds to longstanding concerns raised by groups such as the BC Coalition of Safe and Supportive Housing about weapons and safety risks in some buildings. While she emphasized that the “vast majority” of the nearly 15,000 supportive housing residents are responsible tenants, operators have asked for tools that better reflect the realities of managing these sites.

The Canadian Press report says that the proposed legislation would make it easier to evict tenants found in possession of weapons and provide clearer authority to enforce existing bans. It would also allow operators to temporarily remove tenants during what Boyle described as a “cooling-off period” to reduce serious health and safety risks.
