There is increasing demand for a full public inquiry into the Tumbler Ridge mass killing that claimed nine lives, including the shooter. Two members of British Columbia Green Party said a public inquiry could address systemic issues, including gaps in mental health support.

Larry Neufeld, whose riding includes Tumbler Ridge, said residents deserve answers about missed warning signs and whether agencies or private organizations had information that could have triggered an intervention.

David Eby emphasized that the police investigation is ongoing, and any public inquiry would need to wait. He added that answers will come through a coroner’s inquest or a formal inquiry.

Eby also raised concerns about artificial intelligence, noting that the shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, had her ChatGPT account banned months before the February 10 killings, but authorities were not alerted. Eby said he plans to meet with Sam Altman to discuss establishing a Canadian standard for AI companies to report alarming activity to police. He highlighted the benefits of AI to everyday life and tech investments, while warning of its potential dangers if left unregulated.
