Nova Scotia officials say a workplace safety investigation into the death of a Walmart employee whose body was discovered inside a walk-in bakery oven has found the equipment was functioning properly.

The province’s Labour Department concluded there were no safety violations that contributed to the death of the 19-year-old woman at a Walmart store in Halifax in October 2024. Investigators also determined there were no wider safety concerns linked to the specific oven model involved.

A separate police investigation, which wrapped up in November 2024, found the death was not suspicious and uncovered no evidence of foul play.

The woman was identified by the Maritime Sikh Society as Gursimran Kaur, who had immigrated to Canada from India with her mother. Her mother was also employed at the store.

Police previously said officers reviewed surveillance footage and conducted multiple interviews, concluding no one else was involved in the circumstances surrounding her death.
