Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre unveiled a plan to strengthen Canada’s economy and sovereignty in order to secure tariff-free trade with the United States, arguing that while Canada cannot control U.S. actions, it can build its own leverage.
His proposals include creating a Canadian-controlled Strategic Energy and Mineral Reserve to safeguard supply during crises, and overhauling tax, subsidy and investment rules to keep Canadian-developed technology and intellectual property in Canadian hands. He also pledged to restrict foreign takeovers of sensitive assets and allow venture capital to reinvest gains tax-free in domestic innovation.
Poilievre called for negotiating a new tariff-free Auto Pact with the U.S., using access to Canada’s market as leverage while protecting North American production from Chinese imports. He emphasized that China is not a substitute for the U.S. as Canada’s key trading partner. He also proposed cancelling federal EV rebates for foreign-made vehicles and removing sales tax on Canadian-made cars.
The plan includes forming an all-party parliamentary group to prepare for the upcoming CUSMA review and boosting Arctic and national defence capacity through new bases, more icebreakers, faster military procurement and expanded recruitment.
Poilievre further pledged to eliminate carbon taxes, accelerate approval of major resource and infrastructure projects, strengthen digital sovereignty, and reduce red tape to spur housing construction. He concluded that economic strength, energy security and self-reliance are essential to protecting Canada’s sovereignty and improving its negotiating power abroad.
