Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim made an unfounded allegation earlier this month that city Coun. Sean Orr had handed out illegal drugs on Christmas Day, a claim Orr strongly denies.
According to a recording of a Feb. 6 briefing with Chinese-speaking reporters, Sim stated in English that Orr had been distributing illegal drugs to people on the street on Christmas Day. Orr says he was not even in Vancouver at the time and called the accusation shocking and baseless.
The claim was later shared on Chinese-language social media by Coun. Lenny Zhou, a member of Sim’s ABC Party. Zhou has since issued an unequivocal apology, retracting the statement and acknowledging it was incorrect.
While Sim publicly thanked Zhou for taking responsibility and correcting the misinformation, he did not disclose that he had been the original source of the allegation.
