A snowboarder has died in an avalanche near Pemberton, B.C., marking the third avalanche-related fatality in the province this month.
According to Avalanche Canada, the snowboarder was killed Tuesday after triggering a wind-slab avalanche near Anniversary Glacier, about 26 kilometres east of Pemberton. A witness attempted a rescue, but the victim was later located by Pemberton Search and Rescue.
The incident occurred during a period of significant snowfall across the region, including in Whistler, where Environment Canada recorded 24 centimetres of snow on Monday.
The death follows two other recent avalanche fatalities in British Columbia. A heli-skier was killed last Thursday in a slide near Revelstoke while in the backcountry with a guide and three others. On Feb. 17, a snowmobiler died near Fernie after triggering an avalanche while ascending a slope toward a ridge.
