B.C. Premier David Eby says families of those killed in the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting are seeking clarity about what OpenAI knew about the suspect and when.
OpenAI contacted police after the killings to disclose that the accused had been removed from its ChatGPT platform in June due to concerning activity, but the company had not previously alerted law enforcement. Eby said OpenAI officials must provide a full explanation and confirmed he has requested a meeting with the company regarding the attack.
The premier is also calling on the federal government to introduce legislation requiring artificial intelligence companies to report suspicious or dangerous behaviour to police once a certain threshold is met.
Eby said revelations that OpenAI may have had information that could potentially have prevented the deaths of eight people are deeply distressing for the victims’ families and Canadians nationwide.
