OpenAI says it terminated the ChatGPT account of Tumbler Ridge shooting suspect Jesse Van Rootselaar in 2025 after it was internally flagged for misuse linked to violent activity.

After the mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, OpenAI said it proactively contacted the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to provide information about the suspect’s use of ChatGPT and pledged to continue supporting the investigation.

The suspect’s online footprint reportedly extended beyond ChatGPT. A Roblox account associated with Van Rootselaar was also banned after allegedly being used in a game promoting a virtual shooting scenario. Posts attributed to the suspect on other platforms referenced mental health struggles, past trauma and an interest in mass violence.

Authorities have said they had prior interactions with Van Rootselaar before the Feb. 10 shooting that left eight people dead, including instances where she was apprehended under the Mental Health Act. The RCMP has confirmed investigators are closely reviewing her online activity as part of the probe.

“Digital and physical evidence is being collected, prioritized, and methodically processed,” said Staff Sgt. Kris Clark of the B.C. RCMP, noting the review includes electronic devices and social media activity.
