An Ontario man accused of laundering hundreds of millions of dollars for an international drug trafficking network allegedly led by former Olympian Ryan Wedding has been denied bail.
Rolan Sokolovski had sought release ahead of an extradition hearing that will determine whether he will be sent to the United States to face charges tied to his alleged role in the operation. His lawyers proposed strict conditions, including house arrest, living with sureties and 24-hour GPS monitoring.
According to the report by The Canadian Press, prosecutors opposed the request, arguing he poses a flight risk and that detention is necessary to maintain public safety and confidence in the justice system.U.S. authorities allege Sokolovski acted as a “de facto bank” for the organization, laundering proceeds through his jewelry business and acquiring luxury goods for Wedding. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, he may control tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency and other assets.
Wedding was arrested in Mexico last month following a multinational investigation and transferred to the United States to face several charges. He is also accused of ordering multiple killings, including that of a potential witness in a 2024 narcotics case, after being placed on the Federal Bureau of Investigation Top 10 Most Wanted list with a $15-million reward offered for information leading to his arrest.
A Calgary judge has refused bail for 33-year-old Allistair Chapman, who also faces extradition to the U.S. in connection with alleged Canadian drug kingpin Ryan Wedding.
