The City of Surrey has officially entered the race to host Canada Soccer’s new national training centre. The city on Tuesday said that it has submitted a formal response to the national organization’s request to explore potential locations for what is being described as a landmark legacy project of the 2026 FIFA World Cup™.

The proposed facility is intended to serve as a permanent high-performance hub for the sport in Canada. Beyond serving as a home base for national teams, the centre would house athlete development programs, education for coaches and referees, sports science research, and various community-based initiatives.

Mayor Brenda Locke touted Surrey’s demographic and infrastructure advantages as key reasons for the bid. “Surrey is a natural fit for this kind of world-class facility,” Locke stated, pointing to the city’s status as one of Canada’s youngest and fastest-growing populations. She added that the city’s strong existing soccer culture and robust transportation links make it a premier candidate for the project.

Surrey’s submission emphasizes its central regional location and access to large potential sites near major transportation corridors. The city is also framing the bid as a key component of its broader 2024 Economic Strategy and 2025 Sport Tourism Strategy, aiming to cement Surrey’s reputation as a top-tier destination for international sporting events.

While this submission represents a significant early step in showcasing Surrey’s strengths, Canada Soccer has noted that this is currently a preliminary stage to evaluate potential partners and visions. The organization will continue to review expressions of interest from across the country before moving toward a formal proposal process.
