17-year-old charged following shooting in Nanaimo

A 17-year-old youth has been arrested and hit with several criminal charges following a shooting on February 11 that left another teenager injured. Nanaimo RCMP confirmed the arrest after a brief investigation into the violent encounter.

According to police, the victim is a 15-year-old boy who suffered a gunshot wound during the incident. He was transported to the hospital for treatment and has since been discharged to continue his recovery at home. The suspect was taken into custody two days after the shooting occurred.

The accused faces a string of serious charges, including discharging a firearm with intent, aggravated assault, and assault with a weapon. Additionally, he has been charged with possession of a firearm without a license and possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order.

Despite the suspect being in custody, authorities have not yet located the weapon used in the crime. Inspector Donovan Tait expressed significant concern regarding the nature of the case, stating, “This is a serious and deeply concerning incident of violence involving youth in our community. Our investigators are working tirelessly to recover the firearm and to understand the underlying motives behind this act.”

The 17-year-old remains in police custody pending further legal proceedings. Due to the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the identity of the suspect cannot be released.
