The B.C. RCMP confirmed that the 18-year-old responsible for Tuesday’s mass shooting at a Tumbler Ridge high school was not aiming at specific individuals. Eight people were killed, and the shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, was also found dead at the scene.
Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald warned that social media posts have falsely identified innocent individuals, including someone in Ontario with a similar name, and urged the public and media to share only verified information. “There are many false flags and false trails online, and misinformation can unfairly target innocent people,” he said.
Investigators are examining Van Rootselaar’s online activity, digital footprint, and prior interactions with police. Authorities are also reviewing four firearms, though the source of the weapon used in the attack is not yet known.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and Pierre Poilievre have arrived in Tumbler Ridge to attend a vigil for the victims.
