Police near Victoria are alerting the public to a series of scams involving counterfeit gold jewelry in the Langford area. West Shore RCMP say suspects are approaching people in busy retail parking lots, claiming they need money for gas or food and offering to sell gold jewelry that later turns out to be fake or of little value. Since the start of the year, at least nine incidents have been reported. Officers say scammers often use sympathy and urgency — sometimes involving young children — to pressure victims. Police urge residents not to purchase jewelry from strangers in public places and to report suspicious encounters promptly.
