A mix-up involving a blood pressure medication has prompted a nationwide recall, according to Health Canada.
Two lots of MAR-Amlodipine 5 mg tablets are being recalled after it was discovered that some bottles may contain the wrong drug. MAR-Amlodipine is commonly prescribed to treat high blood pressure and chest pain. However, manufacturer Marcan Pharmaceuticals Inc. mistakenly packaged midodrine — a medication used to treat low blood pressure — in some of the bottles.
Health Canada says the correct MAR-Amlodipine tablets are white to off-white, eight-sided, and marked with “210” and “5.” The incorrectly packaged midodrine 2.5 mg tablets are round and stamped with “M2.”
For patients with high blood pressure, taking midodrine unintentionally could result in serious side effects, including dangerously high blood pressure, dizziness, fainting or potential organ damage.
Anyone who finds round or unusual tablets in a bottle labelled MAR-Amlodipine should stop taking the medication immediately and return it to their pharmacy.
Those who may have taken the wrong medication are advised to seek medical attention. Call 911 if you experience symptoms such as dizziness, unusually high blood pressure, a slow heartbeat, chest pain, sudden severe headache, difficulty speaking, or weakness or numbness in any part of the body.
