The Canadian flag was raised outside Canada’s new consulate in Greenland today, as Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand formally opened the diplomatic mission. Anand said the ceremony reflects Canada’s commitment to strengthening co-operation and deepening ties with Greenland and Denmark.

Canada first announced plans for the consulate in 2024, but the opening carries added significance amid renewed remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump about annexing Greenland.

Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt said the flag-raising highlights the longstanding and close relationship between Canada and Greenland, calling it a historic moment.

Although the consulate has been operating quietly in Nuuk for several weeks, today’s ceremony marked its official opening, with Anand raising the Canadian flag outside the building.

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami president Natan Obed while talking to The Canadian Press ,said more than 90 Inuit from Canada travelled to Nuuk to attend the event and show their support. He noted the consulate was a commitment outlined in Canada’s 2024 Arctic foreign policy and said stronger ties will benefit not only Canada and Greenland, but Inuit communities in both regions.
