The man accused of killing a 30-year-old woman at an Abbotsford hotel last month now faces a first-degree murder charge, homicide investigators confirm.
Sondeep Singh Gill, 26, was initially charged with second-degree murder and indignity to human remains following the death of the woman at the Best Western Plus on Marshall Road on January 15.
On Tuesday, the B.C. Prosecution Service approved upgrading the charge to first-degree murder, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) announced Wednesday.
Both first- and second-degree murder convictions carry an automatic life sentence, but second-degree convictions allow for the possibility of parole after 10 years. First-degree murder convictions come with no parole eligibility for 25 years.
Gill’s charges have not yet been proven in court. He is next scheduled to appear on March 3.
