Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is introducing Small Care Homes, a new long-term care model designed to provide personalized, home-like environments for seniors. Each home accommodates up to 10 residents, offering private rooms, shared living spaces, and around-the-clock clinical care, while fostering social engagement, emotional well-being, and cultural connections.
The homes aim to bridge the gap between independent living and traditional long-term care, allowing seniors to stay close to family and community. Compared to larger facilities, Small Care Homes are quicker and more sustainable to set up, with fewer construction impacts.
VCH, in partnership with BC Housing, local governments, Indigenous communities, and other organizations, plans to open the first three homes in Spring 2026 and create 200 new beds by 2029. The initiative complements existing programs and reflects B.C.’s broader strategy to expand long-term care while supporting aging in place.
