Deaf and hard of hearing customers will now find it easier to access ICBC driver licensing services, thanks to the introduction of B.C.’s first virtual, on-demand American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation program at five locations across the province.

ICBC has teamed up with Burnaby-based, Deaf-owned Convo Communications to roll out the free service, known as Convo Access. The program provides live ASL interpretation through a secure video call on a mobile device. Beginning in April, the service will be expanded to all ICBC driver licensing offices.

Customers can access the interpretation service by scanning a QR code with their smartphone to connect instantly with an ASL interpreter through a secure video link — no app or download required.

The ASL service can be used for routine driver licensing matters, including:

  • Renewing or replacing a driver’s licence or identification
  • Paying or disputing a ticket
  • Requesting a copy of a driving record

The service is currently available at the following ICBC driver licensing offices:

  • Burnaby (Metrotown): 232-4820 Kingsway
  • Kamloops: 937 Concordia Way
  • Kelowna: 1720 Springfield Road
  • Surrey (Guildford): 10470 152 Street
  • Victoria: 1-1150 McKenzie Avenue

ICBC says the expansion reflects its broader commitment to improving accessibility for both customers and employees across the province.
