The British Columbia government says artificial intelligence and data centre projects will now have to compete for access to electricity under a new selection process.

Energy Minister Adrian Dix says eligible companies will vie for a total of 400 megawatts of power available over a two-year period.

The requirement will not apply to traditional sectors such as liquefied natural gas, forestry or mining.

Dix says the move is intended to help the province manage growing electricity demand by capping how much power certain industries can access.

BC Hydro projects electricity demand in the province will rise by at least 15 per cent by 2030.

Applications open March 18, while projects already underway will not be required to enter the competition.
