The B.C. Greens are welcoming a Vancouver company’s decision to abandon the sale of a Virginia warehouse to the U.S. government, calling it a victory driven by sustained public pressure.
The Jim Pattison Group announced it will not move forward with the proposed deal, which would have transferred ownership of the property to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The department had planned to convert the site into a processing centre for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
According to The Canadian Press, B.C. Greens Leader Emily Lowan credited unions and community organizations for helping derail the agreement, saying the sale would have amounted to “enabling immigration enforcement abuses” in the United States.
