A 49-year-old man is facing a string of serious attempted murder and firearms charges following a shooting on New Year’s Day in the Newton area, the Surrey Police Service (SPS) announced this week.
The incident occurred late on the night of January 1, 2026. At approximately 11:45 p.m., police officers responded to reports of gunfire inside a residence located near 140B Street and 59 Avenue. Upon arrival, SPS members discovered an injured man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was rushed to a local hospital and has since been reported to be in stable condition.
A second man was identified at the scene and immediately taken into custody. Following the arrest, the Surrey Police Service’s Serious Crime Unit (SCU) took over the investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the discharge of the weapon.
On January 28, 2026, the BC Prosecution Service formally approved several Criminal Code charges against the suspect, identified as Chanchal Badwal. The charges include one count of attempted murder and one count of discharging a firearm with intent to endanger life.
Badwal also faces charges for the possession of a loaded prohibited firearm, discharging a prohibited firearm, and assault causing bodily harm. Additionally, he has been charged with one count of breaching a release order.
Authorities confirmed that Badwal remains in custody as he awaits his next legal proceeding. He is scheduled to make his next court appearance on February 6, 2026.
