British Columbia Premier David Eby says it is “crucial” that federal MPs pass bail reform legislation quickly to close a loophole allowing extortion suspects to claim refugee status. Eby described the ongoing violence in communities such as Surrey, B.C., as a “terror attack in slow motion.” He says while it could never be dreamed that a participant in a terror attack could get refugee status, that’s “exactly what’s happening under our current system.”The Canada Border Services Agency reported last month that 15 foreign nationals charged with extortion had filed applications for refugee status in Canada. The revelation had angered current and former mayors of Surrey.
The federal government has announced additional measures to address the issue, including the deployment of 20 RCMP officers to Metro Vancouver.
