The union representing ambulance paramedics and emergency dispatchers in British Columbia says over 6,000 members will vote on whether to strike in early February.

Ambulance Paramedics of BC – CUPE 733 announced the electronic vote will begin Feb. 2 after negotiations for a new collective agreement failed last week. Union president Jason Jackson said the government’s current offer still falls short of what members need to support their families and safeguard their mental health and safety.

The vote will be conducted electronically over two weeks. Once an essential services order is established, workers will be legally positioned to strike.

The union notes that ambulance services face ongoing staffing pressures, with paramedics deployed across the province to fill long-term gaps, especially in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities. Members are reportedly frustrated and disheartened by the situation.
