A relentless wave of violent extortion reached a grim new milestone early Wednesday morning as a grocery store on Scott Road became the latest target in a spree of gunfire terrorizing the city’s business community. The brazen attack on Big Bazaar marks the ninth extortion-related shooting in Surrey in just twenty-eight days, signaling an escalating crisis that has local entrepreneurs and residents fearing for their safety.
The Surrey Police Service (SPS) is investigating the early morning shooting at a grocery store in the Newton neighborhood.
SPS in a statement said that at approximately 3:50 a.m. on January 28, SPS members responded to reports of gunfire in the 8100 block of 120 Street (Scott Road). Upon arrival, officers discovered that business had sustained damage from multiple gunshots. Fortunately, the business was unoccupied at the time, and no injuries were reported.
The SPS Major Crime Section has taken over the investigation and is currently gathering evidence and reviewing surveillance footage. While a specific motive has not yet been confirmed, investigators stated that the attack appears to be linked to an ongoing series of extortions targeting local business owners in Surrey.
The surge in violence has prompted increased concern among the business community and local residents. Police are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area of Scott Road between 3:30 a.m. and 4:15 a.m. to contact investigators immediately
The SPS said on Monday that 36 extortion incidents have been recorded so far this month, including eight extortion-related shooting incidents.
