A proactive patrol targeting extortion hotspots led to the arrest of two foreign nationals early Monday morning after shots were fired in a Newton neighborhood.
At approximately 3:50 a.m. on January 26, Surrey Police Service (SPS) officers with Project Assurance were patrolling the area of 129 Street and 84 Avenue. Project Assurance is a specialized initiative where officers proactively monitor business corridors and neighborhoods that have been frequently targeted by recent extortion attempts and related violence. During the patrol, officers reported hearing a gunshot and immediately moved to intercept a suspect vehicle.
SPS said that after locating and stopping the vehicle, police took the driver and a passenger into custody. A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery and seizure of a loaded handgun. The SPS Major Crime Section has since taken over the investigation, leading to formal charges against the two occupants.
The suspects have been identified as 20-year-old Harshdeep Singh and 21-year-old Hanspreet Singh. Harshdeep Singh is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and occupying a vehicle knowing a firearm is present. Hanspreet Singh faces one count of occupying a vehicle knowing a firearm is present.
Police confirmed that both men are foreign nationals, and as a result, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has been engaged to review their status. Both individuals have been remanded in custody until January 30, 2026. Investigators state the probe is ongoing and further charges may be pending as they determine if there are links to the broader extortion crisis currently plaguing the city.
SPS staff sergeant Lindsey Houghton said that no damage has been reported by any business or residence in the area after the shooting. “The area where shots were fired is near to a business corridor and multiple businesses are there, so police are further investigating the incident,” he said.
