The Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs says its members are disappointed that, to their knowledge, the University of B.C. did not prevent a residential school denialism event last week.

According to The Canadian Press, in a letter to UBC President Benoit-Antoine Bacon, the union said such denialism proliferates under the guise of academic freedom and freedom of speech while promoting white supremacy, racism, and misinformation.

The criticism follows a statement from the university last Thursday saying RCMP officers had “facilitated” the removal of a group from the One B.C. party after they failed to leave campus for their own safety. The group, led by MLA and party leader Dallas Brodie—who has disputed accounts of unmarked graves at residential schools—had gathered for what UBC described as a “protest event” in front of its Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre, where they were met by counter-protesters.
