Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada must remain anchored in its core values to protect its sovereignty, as he opened a two-day cabinet retreat in Quebec City on Tuesday.
Carney said the country was built by people from diverse backgrounds working together, grounded in principles of openness and multiculturalism, and argued those values position Canada as an example to the world at a time when authoritarianism is on the rise.
According to The Canadian Press,in remarks to cabinet, Carney outlined several government priorities, including increasing defence spending, developing a national artificial intelligence strategy, advancing major infrastructure and resource projects, and moving forward with Criminal Code reforms.
Cabinet ministers are expected to hear from experts in government, finance, community services, advanced technology and global affairs during the retreat.
Carney said Canada can demonstrate that a different path is possible, one in which the course of history is not pulled toward authoritarianism and exclusion but continues to move toward progress and justice. He made the remarks during a national address Thursday afternoon.
The federal planning forum is being held at the Citadelle, the Governor General’s second official residence. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the retreat is centred on the government’s core objective of building a stronger, more sustainable and more self-reliant Canadian economy that delivers benefits for all Canadians.
