Canada will not pay $1 billion US for a permanent seat on U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed “Board of Peace” to oversee Gaza’s governance and reconstruction, Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said Tuesday.
Champagne noted that the board’s details are still being finalized, and Prime Minister Mark Carney will decide on Canada’s involvement once all information is known. Carney emphasized that Ottawa is focused on providing direct humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza rather than paying for board membership.
The board, chaired for life by Trump, would offer permanent membership to countries paying $1 billion US; otherwise, member terms are limited to three years. Some countries, including the UAE and Hungary, have publicly accepted invitations, while others remain cautious about the board’s potential impact on the United Nations’ authority.
