A brazen overnight shooting at a residence in the Panorama Ridge neighborhood has marked the fourth extortion-related attack in the Lower Mainland in just one week, as police grapple with a violent criminal campaign increasingly targeting the region’s South Asian community.
At approximately 12:50 a.m. on Thursday, January 15, Surrey Police Service (SPS) officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 13400 block of 56 Avenue. Upon arrival, investigators confirmed that both a home and a vehicle had sustained significant damage from gunshots. While the residence was occupied at the time, authorities report that no injuries were sustained. The SPS Major Crime Section has now taken over the investigation from the Frontline Investigative Support Team (FLIST) as they work to identify the suspects behind the attack.
The shooting represents a troubling escalation in a series of organized extortions that has gripped the city. According to police data, Surrey has seen 17 reported extortion cases since the beginning of 2026, four of which have involved the discharge of firearms. This latest incident is the second extortion-related shooting in Surrey in just two days, following similar targeted attacks in Langley and Delta last week that investigators have linked to the same criminal motive.
Public anxiety in the region is further heightened by the daylight killing of Surrey businessman Baljinder “Binder” Singh Garcha, who was found shot dead in the street around midday on Tuesday. While the community has speculated on potential connections between the homicide and the extortion wave, the SPS stated they have not yet established a formal link between the two. However, the sheer frequency of gunfire in residential areas has prompted an urgent appeal for public assistance.
The Surrey Police Service is urging anyone with information, dashcam footage, or CCTV from the Panorama Ridge area to come forward. Investigators are particularly interested in any suspicious activity captured near the 13400 block of 56 Avenue shortly before or after the 12:50 a.m. shots were fired.
