Surrey police services are investigating another shooting suspected to be related to extortion at a Surrey restaurant Wednesday morning. Shortly after 2 am, SPS officers responded to reports of shots fired at Newton’s Bhojan Sweets & Restaurant located on King George Boulevard near 80 Avenue.

Police say a business was damaged by gunfire, but no one was injured. While the investigation is still in its early stages, police believe the shooting is linked to ongoing extortion cases targeting local businesses.

The latest shooting marks the 17th extortion related investigation since the beginning of this year and the fourth involving gunfire.

Sgt. Tige Pollock said, “Our investigators are working diligently to try to solve these cases. We are working closely with the province’s extortion task force, increasing staffing, and using both overt and covert enforcement strategies”.

“Some unit responsibilities have been shifted to focus on extortion, while frontline services continue and calls are still being answered in a timely manner,” he added.
