Another South Asian business became the latest target of gunfire early Wednesday morning, an incident Surrey Police Service (SPS) investigators believe is linked to an ongoing string of extortions in the city.
The shooting occurred at approximately 2:10 a.m. in the 8000-block of King George Boulevard. Responding officers arrived to find that The Bhojan Sweets and Restaurant had been struck by multiple rounds. While the building sustained damage, no injuries were reported as the business was closed at the time.
The SPS Frontline Investigative Support Team (FLIST) initially secured the area, but the investigation has since been elevated to the SPS Major Crime Section due to the targeted nature of the attack.
Investigators are currently working under the theory that the attack is part of a coordinated intimidation campaign.
“While the motive remains under investigation, the incident appears to be consistent with the series of extortions currently targeting businesses in Surrey,” the SPS stated in a news release on Wednesday.
In just the first 14 days of the year, 17 extortion cases have been officially reported in Surrey. The attack on The Bhojan Sweets and Restaurant marks the fourth time since January 1 when South Asian community has been targeted with gunfire in connection with extortion.
Forensic investigators remained on-site through Wednesday afternoon, collecting shell casings and reviewing surveillance footage from the restaurant and surrounding properties.
Local business owners have expressed increasing anxiety over the frequency of these incidents, calling for heightened patrols in commercial hubs.
The SPS is urging anyone with dashcam footage from the area of King George Boulevard and 80th Avenue between 1:45 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. to come forward.
