A quiet Newton neighborhood was shaken late New Year’s Day after a shooting inside a residence left one man injured following which one person was arrested.
In a statement the Surrey Police Service (SPS) said they responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 11:45 p.m. on January 1. “Officers arrived at a home near the intersection of 140B Street and 59 Avenue, where they discovered a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound,” SPS said.
Emergency health services transported the victim to a nearby hospital. According to a statement released by the SPS on Friday morning, the victim remains in stable condition.
Police confirmed that a second male was arrested at the scene. While investigators have not yet released the identity of the suspect or the specific charges being considered, they clarified that the individual is currently being questioned by authorities.
The SPS Serious Crime Unit (SCU) has taken over the lead on the investigation. In an effort to address growing community concerns regarding a recent spike in organized crime in the Lower Mainland, officials stated that this specific incident does not appear to be related to the ongoing wave of extortion attempts targeting local businesses.
“While the investigation is in its early stages, we believe this was an isolated incident,” the SPS noted in their briefing.
Forensic teams remained at the Newton residence through the early hours of Friday morning to process the scene.
Police are appealing to the public for help. Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area of 140B Street and 59 Avenue, or who may have dashcam or CCTV footage from late Thursday night, is urged to contact the Surrey Police Service non-emergency line at 604-599-0502, quoting file number 26-357 (SP).
