Tehran has declared Canada’s navy a terrorist organization, retaliating against Ottawa’s decision to add an Iranian military branch to its list of extremist groups.

In a statement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said Canada’s 2024 designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist entity violated international law.

The ministry pointed to a 2019 Iranian law — enacted after the United States blacklisted the IRGC — that allows Iran to take reciprocal action against countries that follow Washington’s lead.

According to the statement, Iran considers the Royal Canadian Navy to fall under that law and is therefore designating it as a terrorist organization.

The Department of National Defence directed questions about the move to Global Affairs Canada, which has not yet commented.

Canada has accused Iran of repeatedly violating human rights and fundamental freedoms, and says Tehran’s actions have posed serious threats to global peace and security.
