The maternity unit at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock shut down again Monday morning. Expectant parents will be sent to other hospitals for the next three days.
Fraser Health says the diversion is happening because there aren’t enough obstetricians. The health authority has been warning about possible staffing shortages at Ridge Meadows and Peace Arch hospitals since early December. This is the second 72-hour diversion at Peace Arch in recent weeks, and Ridge Meadows Hospital also diverted maternity patients for 96 hours from Dec. 18 to 22.
“If you are in labour or have concerns about your pregnancy, call the Maternity Unit first. Staff will tell you which hospital to go to,” Fraser Health said on social media. The authority says it has hired six new obstetricians this year and is continuing to recruit more. One new doctor is expected to start at Peace Arch in spring 2026.
Separately, Mission Memorial Hospital’s emergency department will close at 6 p.m. Monday and will operate only from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Jan. 7.
