The maternity unit at Ridge Meadows Hospital in Maple Ridge will be closed through the weekend, raising safety concerns among some care providers for expectant parents.

Fraser Health announced the temporary closure, saying patients will be redirected to other hospitals for 96 hours, from 8 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, to 8 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, due to a shortage of obstetricians. The health authority acknowledged the disruption, apologizing for the added stress and emphasizing that the measure is intended to ensure safe, continuous care for both parent and baby.

Fraser Health also warned that a similar temporary diversion may occur at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock over the holiday season, depending on staffing levels and unexpected absences.

Patients are being advised to call the maternity units at both hospitals before arriving.
