New data from Statistics Canada reveals a tightening labor market, with 3.3 unemployed persons for every single job vacancy in October.
This metric, referred to by the department as the “unemployment-to-job vacancy ratio,” has increased by 0.5 compared to the same period last year. The national unemployment rate stood at 6.9 percent for the month.
According to the report, the total number of job vacancies in Canada dropped by 19,100 (-3.9 percent) in October, leaving 467,000 positions unfilled. Notable declines in available roles were observed across several sectors, including finance and insurance, administration, waste management and remediation, real estate and leasing, as well as information and cultural industries. Conversely, the mining, and oil and gas extraction sectors saw an increase in vacancies.
On an annual basis, average weekly earnings rose by 2.2 percent in October, reaching $1,312. On average, Canadians worked 33.3 hours per week. The report noted that the increase in weekly earnings reflects several factors, including changes in wages and hours worked.
