The World Health Organization’s vaccine safety committee announced Thursday that new scientific reviews have again found no link between vaccines and autism spectrum disorder, reaffirming conclusions first reached more than twenty years ago.
The WHO Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety evaluated two systematic reviews that analyzed studies published between 2010 and August 2025.
These reviews looked at vaccines in general as well as those containing thiomersal, a mercury-based preservative long alleged by critics to contribute to autism — a claim repeatedly disproven by scientific research. The committee noted that a causal link between vaccines and any health outcome is only considered when multiple high-quality studies consistently show a statistical connection.
According to the WHO, 20 out of 31 studies found no evidence of any association between vaccines and autism. The remaining 11 studies, which suggested a possible link, were judged to have major methodological problems and a high risk of bias.
Last month, U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in an interview with the New York Times that he had personally directed the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to change its long-standing position that vaccines do not cause autism.
