British Columbia has launched a new centralized website (www.stopextortion.ca) aimed at providing clear, accessible information and support for the public amidst a surge in extortion-related crimes across the Lower Mainland.

The new website is designed as a single source for anyone seeking to understand the nature of extortion in B.C., learn how the newly formed B.C. Extortion Task Force is responding, understand the processes for reporting crimes or submitting tips, and find available supports for individuals and businesses affected by these threats. Crucially, the site is available in both English and Punjabi to serve the affected communities directly.

The launch comes as recent data highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive response to the crisis, which has been escalating this year.

According to the Surrey Police Service, the city has recorded 106 extortion files so far this year. Disturbingly, 44 of those cases have involved shootings.

The threats, often targeting business owners and residents, have led to heightened efforts across law enforcement agencies:

Meanwhile, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is actively investigating 95 foreign nationals who are believed to be inadmissible to Canada due to their alleged involvement in these extortion schemes. CBSA has informed that as a result of these investigations, five individuals have already been deported from Canada.

The provincial website serves as a proactive measure to arm the community with knowledge, encouraging victims and witnesses to come forward while clarifying the multifaceted response being coordinated by police, federal agencies, and the provincial government.
