Emergency Management Minister Kelly Greene says a state of local emergency has been declared in the Fraser Valley due to flood risks from a series of atmospheric river weather systems that are drenching the province.
Flooding in the Chilliwack River Valley prompted an evacuation order and alert on Wednesday, the Fraser Valley Regional District said.
An evacuation order was issued for residents of eight properties on Wilson Road due to an “immediate danger to life safety” caused by high river flows.
Another 12 properties on Chilliwack River Road were placed under an evacuation alert, advising residents to be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice.
“Police and fire services will be expediting this action,” the district’s notice stated.
The order and alert follow the district’s declaration of a local state of emergency as an atmospheric river brings heavy rainfall and increased risk to people and property across B.C.’s South Coast.
