President Donald Trump has threatened to impose “very tough tariffs” on Canadian fertilizer, stating he would do so “if they had to.”

Trump made the remarks on Monday during a roundtable event at the White House while responding to reporters’ questions. The event was held to announce a US$12 billion tariff relief fund for American farmers. These farmers have been facing rising costs for agricultural inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer, amid the global trade disputes initiated during the Trump administration.

“A lot of it (fertilizer) comes from Canada, and so we will put very tough tariffs on it, if we have to, because that is the way you want to boost domestic production here,” Trump stated.

Earlier this year, when Trump initially imposed a flat 25% tariff on Canadian goods, he faced opposition from industry groups and Republican lawmakers in agricultural states. Following this pushback, the tariff on fertilizer was reduced to 10%.

This current tariff only applies to the amount of fertilizer exported to the U.S. that exceeds the free trade limit established under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).
