Prime Minister Carney announced today that the federal government will partner with the City of Ottawa to invest $400 million to construct up to 3,000 affordable homes in the capital.
Carney stated that the City of Ottawa will accelerate home construction by waiving development charges, permit fees, and property taxes associated with the projects.
The federal home building agency, Build Canada Homes, will assist in providing financial support for the construction of 2,000 of these units on federally owned land. The Prime Minister confirmed that construction is slated to begin next year.
In addition to the housing initiative, the federal government is dedicating $1.2 million to a pilot project aimed at finding new ways to address drug addiction issues within the city. The dual investment underscores a commitment to improving both housing security and public health outcomes in Ottawa.
