In a significant effort to address healthcare staffing challenges across Canada, the federal government today announced the launch of a new Express Entry category specifically targeting foreign-trained doctors.

Immigration Minister Lena Diab made the announcement at a press conference, stating, “We have seen the strain in our emergency rooms, we hear from families waiting for a doctor, and we feel it from the front-line staff who are working stretched thin. We have heard a clear message from patients, provinces, and the medical community that we need more help.”

These new measures are aimed at internationally trained doctors who have gained at least one year of Canadian work experience within the last three years.

Foreign-trained physicians nominated under this program will benefit from accelerated 14-day work permit processing. Furthermore, in addition to the existing Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) allocations, 5,000 federal admission spots will be reserved for provinces and territories to nominate licensed doctors who have job offers.

The program is designed to create a direct and expedited pathway for qualified physicians to achieve permanent residency, rapidly integrating them into the Canadian healthcare system.
