The replacement crossing for the aging Pattullo Bridge has officially been named the stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge (pronounced stal-oh-ah-sum) in a ceremony marking a significant construction milestone and an act of reconciliation with First Nations partners.

The name was gifted by the Kwantlen First Nation and Musqueam Indian Band. In the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language, stal̕əw̓asəm means “a place where you can view the river.” The new crossing will also be known by its English name, Riverview Bridge.

The announcement signals a major project milestone as the bridge deck is now connected, and final paving work is underway. Traffic transfer to the new structure will begin in phases over the coming weeks.

Transportation and Transit Minister Mike Farnworth confirmed that the first phase, a northbound lane linking to Columbia Street, is targeted to open around December 24. The Minister further confirmed that all four lanes of the Bridge will be fully operational by mid-February.

The new design features four wider lanes, a central median, and barrier-separated lanes dedicated to walking and cycling. These features are designed to significantly improve safety and travel efficiency for people and commercial transport moving between New Westminster and Surrey.

The government stated that the naming initiative is part of the province’s commitment to reconciliation. Minister Farnworth emphasized that the name “acknowledges the history of these lands, and represents the preservation of culture and language.”

Regarding the existing infrastructure, the Minister noted that the demolition of the old Pattullo Bridge is expected to take over a year after the new crossing is fully opened.
