The Federal government has begun sending informational letters to nearly 70,000 public servants regarding a planned early retirement program, part of its broader efforts to reduce the size of the public service.
A government official confirmed that letters are being distributed to approximately 68,000 public servants who may be eligible for the voluntary program.
The initiative is central to Ottawa’s goal of cutting around 40,000 public service jobs from the peak staffing level of 368,000 positions reached in 2023-24. Approximately 10,000 jobs were already eliminated last year through other measures.
The government is offering this voluntary program to increase the retirement rate and avoid the need for layoffs among younger staff. Eligible employees will be able to retire early without incurring a pension penalty.
According to a digital copy of the letter, public servants are currently advised that no action is required at this time.
The program will only be available to selected employees who apply under the criteria set by the Treasury Board.
The application period will run for 120 days, starting either on January 15, 2026, or within 120 days of the law coming into force, whichever date is later. Employees whose applications are approved will be required to retire within 300 days of receiving approval.
