B.C. Premier David Eby has issued a major statement signaling his willingness to consider new pipeline projects in the province, provided the Federal Tanker Ban remains fully in force.
Premier Eby, who has been a consistent opponent of a new pipeline to the Alberta West Coast, stated in an interview that the Tanker Ban is a fundamental part of the “social license” required for billions of dollars in investment in B.C.
“If we can agree that the Oil Tanker Ban stays in place, then there can be a conversation,” he emphasized. According to Eby, this approach would improve relations with Coastal First Nations and allow for “creative solutions” to be found.
Eby’s comments follow the signing of a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Thursday by Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, which laid out conditions for a new Pacific pipeline. In the MOU, the Liberals agreed not to enforce an Oil and Gas Emissions Cap and consented to grant an exemption to the Tanker Ban if necessary.
Premier Eby called the potential removal of the Tanker Ban a “serious mistake,” warning it would create a massive economic risk from oil spills along B.C.’s northern coast. He also pointed out that the B.C. government has already helped increase the capacity of the Trans Mountain Pipeline by 40 percent, with results expected to materialize by 2026.
