The Trump administration plans to review all refugees admitted to the United States during the Biden administration, according to a government memo obtained and published by The Associated Press. This action marks a fresh setback for the program that has welcomed people fleeing war and persecution for decades.
The review is expected to cause confusion and fear among the nearly 200,000 refugees who arrived in the U.S. during that period. The move is likely to face legal challenges from advocates, some of whom say the action is part of the administration’s “cruel approach” toward people trying to build new lives in the U.S.
A memo issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Joseph Edlow stated that during the Biden administration years, “speed and numbers” were prioritized over detailed screening and vetting.
The memo states that this necessitates a comprehensive review and “re-interview of all refugees admitted from January 20, 2021, to February 20, 2025.” It also indicated that a list of individuals to be re-interviewed will be released within three months.
