Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have agreed to resume negotiations for a new trade agreement, known as the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
In a social media post on Sunday afternoon, Carney stated that the trade deal could double trade between Canada and India, potentially reaching $70 billion.
“India is the world’s fifth-largest economy, and this means huge new opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses,” the Prime Minister said.
A press release issued by India’s Ministry of External Affairs on Sunday afternoon confirmed the development. It also stated that Modi had extended an invitation to Carney to visit India.
Carney’s office confirmed that he has accepted Modi’s invitation and will “visit India in early 2026.”
This latest development signals an improvement in diplomatic relations between Canada and India. Relations between the two nations had been strained following Canada’s accusations in 2023 of the involvement of Indian agents in the murder of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil.
The news comes immediately after Carney and Modi met at the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. This marks the second face-to-face meeting between the two leaders since Carney took office—they last met in June at the G7 Summit in Canada.
