B.C. has joined the rest of Canada in signing an agreement to eliminate interprovincial trade barriers, enabling many goods to be sold nationwide without additional testing, labelling, or certification. B.C. Jobs and Economic Growth Minister Ravi Kahlon called the Canada Mutual Recognition Agreement “decades in the making,” describing it as the largest reduction of red tape in the country’s history. The pact is being signed by trade ministers from all 13 provinces and territories.

Certain products—including food and alcohol—are excluded.

Bridgitte Anderson, president of the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, joined Kahlon at the signing in Victoria, noting that such barriers cost Canada tens of billions of dollars in GDP each year. “If a product is approved for sale in one province, it should be approved in all provinces,” she said, adding that mutual recognition is an international best practice and that Wednesday’s announcement is a welcome step forward.
