The BC RCMP remains committed to supporting ongoing extortion investigations and is providing additional resources to enhance these efforts.

In September 2025, the BC Extortion Task Force was established to strengthen investigations into extortion threats and acts of violence targeting families and businesses within the South Asian community.

The Task Force’s primary objective is to identify those responsible for extortion and related violence, secure criminal charges, bring cases before the courts, and ensure offenders are held accountable.

These added resources will enhance collaboration and information sharing between the Task Force and partner agencies. Intelligence sharing across provincial and national law enforcement agencies is vital for identifying connections between cases, recognizing patterns, and pinpointing suspects or criminal groups.

Local police continue to lead extortion-related investigations alongside the Task Force, with ongoing cooperation and sharing of best practices helping advance these cases. Current investigative findings indicate that these incidents are not being carried out by a single individual or organized crime group.

Beyond investigations, community support and prevention remain a key focus for the BC RCMP. Given the scale and complexity of extortion-related crime, these additional resources are being deployed to bolster investigations and help suppress such criminal activity throughout the province.

The new resources—supporting the dedicated Task Force—include specialized units such as Emergency Response Teams, Police Dog Services, the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia (CFSEU-BC), and BC Highway Patrol. Their efforts will focus on prevention, deterrence, and intelligence gathering to aid ongoing investigations.

“The deployment of these resources is strategic and intelligence-driven, in coordination with the Provincial Extortion Task Force,” said Assistant Commissioner John Brewer, Criminal Operations Officer for the BC RCMP. “These additional personnel will conduct targeted patrols, vehicle stops, and intelligence operations across multiple areas—not limited to any one city or region.”

Assistant Commissioner Brewer also urged the public to stay alert: “We encourage community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to their local police immediately. We also want to thank those who have already come forward with information or reports of extortion. Your trust and cooperation are invaluable.”

If you are being targeted by extortion, do not send money. Contact your local police immediately.
